Essential information
Coach: Mark Neeld (1st season)
2011 season: 8 wins, 13 losses, 1 draw (13th overall)
Player changes
In: Mitch Clark (from Brisbane), James Sellar (Adelaide), Rory Taggert, Josh Tynan
Out: Addam Maric, Tom Scully, Matthew Warnock, Austin Wonaeamirri
Players to watch:
Colin Sylvia: Arguably Melbourne's best player when up and running, but tends to mix up his on field performances with indiscretions both on and off the field. A back injury will force him to miss the start of the season, but will give opportunities to add to police record
Jeremy Howe: Burst onto the scene in the second half of last season with a string of eye-catching performances. Mid-size, high leaping, Tasmanian forward drawing similarities with a certain former Demon forward. All he needs is a guitar.
Questions to ask Demons fans:
- Is this the year we see Jack Watts emerge?
- What were you doing at age 20? Bet it wasn't captaining an AFL club
Questions not to ask:
- Are you guys the next Richmond?
- Who'll get into trouble first, Liam Jurrah, Colin Sylvia or Brent Moloney?
Prediction: The Demons are certainly on the improve, although they seem to be in no great rush to do so. They have a bevy of young talent at their disposal, perhaps even the best outside of the two brand new teams, and when it all clicks Melbourne can be a tough team to beat. However, that happens too rarely for them to be considered a major finals chance, despite their added motivation this season. Give the new coach, game plan, and key forward and backman a season to acclimatise, and the Demons should make the eight in 2013. 10-13th
