Season preview - St Kilda

Essential information
Coach: Scott Watters (1st season)
2011 season: 12 wins, 9 losses, 1 draw (6th overall)

Player changes
In: Jay Lever, Daniel Markworth, Terry Millera, Jack Newnes, Sebastian Ross, Ahmed Saad, Jimmy Webster, Beau Wilkes
Out: Steven Baker, Paul Cahill, Zac Dawson, Ryan Gamble, Michael Gardiner, Nick Heyne, Will Johnson, Tom Lynch, Andrew McQualter, Alistair Smith, Tommy Walsh

Players to watch:
Justin Koschitzke: Need to watch out him, especially on the field, given his famous lack of awareness. If he was a horse he'd have blinkers on, such is his lack of peripheral vision. A danger to himself and others.  Can also occasionally play football when he can put games together.
Sam Gilbert: Damaging defender who perhaps hasn't recovered from a poor 2010 Grand Final and the  'St Kilda schoolgirl' scandal in the following off season. Normally a damaging half back due to his speed and long kicking, at times he looked a little lost and was occasionally a liability.

Questions to ask St Kilda supporters:

  • Is Nick Riewoldt's mark against Sydney the best you've ever seen? (I challenge anyone not to be impressed by this)
  • How is Raphael Clarke still getting a game?
Questions not to ask:
  • Going on St Kilda's history, aren't you due for a wooden spoon?
  • Isn't Ross Lyon a good bloke?

Prediction: Despite having a 'bad' season in 2011, the Saints still finished sixth. If their senior players can maintain their output, with spiritual leader Lenny Hayes returning from injury and a new approach from their new coach, St Kilda still has the list and the proven track record to make the finals for another season. It may be their last chance before the beginning of the end for a golden generation of St Kilda stars. 7-11th
